Flash Floods in Ruidoso, New Mexico Leave Three Dead, Including Two Children

At least three people, including two young children, died after heavy rains caused dangerous flash floods in New Mexico on Tuesday, July 8. The flooding led Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham to declare a state of emergency in the affected areas.

The Village of Ruidoso, a mountain town about 180 miles southeast of Albuquerque, confirmed the deaths in a public statement. According to the village, the three victims were swept away by fast-moving floodwaters during the extreme weather. The Rio Ruidoso river rose to an all-time high of 20 feet, which is five feet higher than the previous record.

Among the victims were a middle-aged man, a 4-year-old girl, and a 7-year-old boy.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy,” said Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford. “Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families who lost their loved ones. Everyone in Ruidoso is standing together in this difficult time to offer support and compassion.”

The floods trapped people in their homes and triggered multiple emergency rescues. The risk of mudslides and runoff was made worse by burn scars left behind from two major wildfires in 2024.

Speaking on a local radio station, Mayor Crawford said there were several reports of mudslides, gas leaks, and homes that were damaged or washed away. He also mentioned that some bridges were damaged or completely submerged due to the powerful floodwaters.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and are urging residents to stay alert and follow safety updates.
