Messi Makes MLS History with 4th Straight Multi-Goal Game in Inter Miami Win

Messi Makes MLS History With Another Double in Inter Miami Win

Lionel Messi has made history once again. The 38-year-old soccer legend scored two goals to lead Inter Miami CF to a 2-1 victory over the New England Revolution on Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts.

With those two goals, Messi became the first player in MLS history to score multiple goals in four straight league matches — and all four games were wins for Miami.

Messi’s first goal came after a mistake by New England’s defense, and he didn’t waste the opportunity. Later in the first half, he scored again after receiving a perfect pass from Sergio Busquets, showing the kind of skill fans around the world know him for.

“Leo is simply a special player,” said Miami head coach Javier Mascherano after the match. “In my opinion, he’s the best player to ever play this sport. It’s amazing to see what he’s still able to do, even at this stage in his career.”

Another Big Win for Miami

This was Messi’s second straight game scoring twice. He also netted two goals last Saturday in a 4-1 win against Montreal. These back-to-back performances have helped Inter Miami climb the standings in the MLS Eastern Conference.

After playing a busy schedule, including the Club World Cup where they lost to Paris Saint-Germain on June 29, there was talk that Messi might be rested in this game. But things didn’t go as planned.

“We were thinking about giving him some rest,” Mascherano admitted. “But after New England scored, we felt the pressure and decided to keep him on the field. We’ll need to find the right moment to rest him in upcoming games because there are many matches ahead.”

Messi’s MLS Impact So Far

Since joining MLS in summer 2023, Messi has been a dominant force. With his two goals against the Revs, he now has 14 goals this season, putting him in second place on the MLS scoring chart — just two behind Nashville SC’s Sam Surridge. He’s also contributed seven assists in just 15 games this season.

The New England Revolution has especially struggled against Messi — he’s now scored seven goals against them, more than any other MLS team he’s faced so far.

This isn't the first time Messi has gone on such a scoring streak. Back in 2012, during his time at Barcelona, he scored multiple goals in six straight games.

What’s Next for Miami?

Inter Miami is currently in fifth place in the Eastern Conference but has three games in hand because of their participation in international tournaments earlier this season. They trail league leaders FC Cincinnati by seven points, but with fewer games played, they have a real chance to catch up.

Next, Miami will face Nashville SC this Saturday at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Messi continues to show why he's considered one of the greatest of all time — not just with trophies, but by setting new records even in a new league.
